While we were out on the water for a casual bird watching outing by the boat looking at herons, terns, kingfishers, ducks, geese and then there were the skimmers. Our spirits were instantly lifted as we saw a conspiracy of 7 healthy individuals of Indian Skimmers. The real show stoppers.

Echoing the words of one of our guests, an ex-air force personnel:

“That is probably the best aerial formations I have ever seen, which makes people like us go completely jaw dropped!” – Mr. Sanjeev Deewan, Retired air force personnel. Stayed with Denwa Backwater Escape in March 2020.

Birds have always inspired us humans in many ways. These, one of the most evolved creatures on the planet, are also responsible for the inception of formation flying in military aviation that we see today. Terns and skimmers are some of the most aerobatic creatures on the planet and are known for their excellent maneuverability skills and mid-air combat.

Indian Skimmers mainly prey upon surface dwelling fish, crustaceans and larvae. They have many sensory receptors in their body along with few on their lower mandibles of beaks.

They are often found nesting on the ground alongside the terns. Skimmers are an endangered species of birds and lucky for us they have found their safe haven in Satpura.
